Banded Demoiselle
Comments(5) # Banded Demoiselle london e17

...yes, yet another Damselfly but a rather special one for me as it's the first Demoiselle I've managed to photograph in London. I thought I saw one last week in the same location and then definitely saw one up the allotment last Friday but only now captured on digital. There are only two Demoiselle species in the UK, this and the aptly named Beautiful Demoiselle. They're larger than the other damselflies and have a fluttery almost butterfly-like flight emphasised by the dark coloured bands on their wings (though the females do not possess these). The bizarre thing is that they're a species usually preferring flowing water and there isn't any of that near where I spotted this one so I guess he's just lost his way and we won't be seeing a new population of Demoiselles in the area any time soon.
