Empty Exuvia
Comments(5) # Empty Exuvia london e17

Well, looks like last week was time to start emerging from the watery stage of the life cycle for the Large Red Damselflies. These are the empty exuvia from which the adult damselfly emerges. The previously aquatic larvae crawl out of the water, their back's split open and then they gradually pull themselves out, a few minutes for the wings to dry and then they're off for the shortest but most obvious (to us) phase of their life cycle. I assume that the damselfly exuvia underneath all the others had already emerged when the next stopped on top of its empty shell but we can't be certain. Canon EOS-1D Mark III
