Peacock Butterfly basking
Comments(3) # Peacock Butterfly basking london e17

Here is a prime example of cyclic photography. I accidentally disturbed this Peacock butterfly whilst out walking but as it flew up from the undergrowth I had one of those deja vu moments and knew exactly where it would fly to. Sure enough round the corner it was landing on this patch of bare soil. For this is where the Peacocks bask every year early in the spring. The ground is their chosen position this time of year when the air may still be cold but extra heat is gained by reflection from the ground. Ah well, always nice to capture the first Peacock of spring even if it is nearly always in exactly the same spot. I've just checked and here is the photo from last year, and here is the one from 2007. Exactly the same spot. Canon EOS-1D Mark III
