Harlequin Ladybird
Comments(2) # Harlequin Ladybird london e14

Not the first Ladybird I've spotted this year but definetely the first Harlequin. This species, Harmonia axyridis, is an alien one that out-competes our native species with their voracious appetites which may even include said natives. This one was spied on a visit to Bow Creek Ecology Park, a nice little green space spreading from beneath a short stretch of the Dockland Light Railway. Since this park was only officially opened last summer one has to be impressed with the speed with which this intruder has arrived in this green oasis amongst the otherwise grey landscape just to the East of the towers of Docklands. Learn more about Harlequins, how to distinguish them from our native species and even how to join in the reporting process, here. Canon EOS 5D
