The continuing damp grey weather is not the best for most photography but it does mean there's a plethora of fungi springing up. These Bonnets or Mycena were sprouting forth from a long dead tree trunk. Though we usually only see these fruiting bodies in damp weather the fungi itself is making its way through the wood throughout the year, slowly digesting the whole thing away. This is the part that fungi play in the ecosystem, returning dead matter to the earth. Canon EOS 40D
