Shaggy Inkcap
Comments(5) # Shaggy Inkcap london e17

Back to the fungi I think. There seem to be a multitude around this year and much earlier than last. These always remind me of Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles when they first emerge but soon turn to something much more homely looking....can you guess what? The Shaggy part of their nomenclature is pretty clear I think but the Inkcap less so from this shot. When mature, however, the gills auto-digest (or deliquesce) which results in an inky black liquid emerging from beneath the cap. The liquid contains the spores and hence this acts as a handy method to aid their dispersal. Canon EOS 40D
