Presumably Pondsk8a to the yoofs...I'll have to check. Oh good, I've gone all middle-aged. Though maybe not quite as impressive as the Water Boatman that we saw a couple of days ago, the Pond Skater has also always fascinated me. Small hairs on the bottom of their feet enable them to skate across the surface of the water without breaking the surface tension, at great speed if they sense something has fallen onto the surface. They're both predators and scavengers, acting as the cleaners of the pond surface(which is good as otherwise I'd have to do it). They trap their prey with their two front legs and then pierce the dead or dying insect's exoskeleton to suck out the bodily fluids. Which is nice. Canon EOS 40D
