Common Kingfisher
Comments(10) # Common Kingfisher london e17

Yes, officially it is called the Common Kingfisher even though they're pretty rare these days. It's one of the species one might perhaps most like to see on a stretch of water, possibly because with its bright colours it really doesn't seem to be possible that this is a native British species. Yet it is, and it's one that I see on most visits to the Walthamstow Reservoirs but usually just as a speeding flash of blue. Since it's such a small bird (about 6 inches), one really has to be quite close to one perching to stand any chance of a decent photo. This one only stayed in this shady spot for a few seconds before zipping off again. Canon EOS 40D
