Chaffinch (again)
Comments(5) # Chaffinch (again) london e17

I know we had a Chaffinch only a few days ago but there are a couple of reasons for another one. Maybe you can spot one of them straight away? Yes, this Chaffinch has only got one leg. It's not just the angle of the shot, he really only does have one leg, I watched him for a few minutes and though he wasn't quite as agile as a two legged specimen he seemed to have adapted pretty well. We have a one legged Greenfinch who visits our garden feeder too, he's been coming for at least the last two years. I'm sure this apparent ability of one legged finches to survive in East London is not the reason for their increased numbers in the RSPB Birdwatch survey results which were announced yesterday. As well as an overall increase in Finch sightings the survey also saw the Goldfinch, into the top ten for the first time and the Siskin into the top twenty and, as I'm sure you'll recall, both species have also shown up in our garden on a regular basis for the first time this year. ..and there'll be an update on yesterday's photo question tomorrow.
