Northern Shovelers
Comments(2) # Northern Shovelers london e17

Whilst we're on the subject of strange looking ducks I don't really think we can ignore the Northern Shoveler. Both male and female appear to have false beaks. Very good for shovelling through the mud and shallow water to sieve out the invertebrates upon which they feed though, I'm sure. The male is the green-headed one of the two. As well as this pair there was another male on the same stretch of water and every time the paired male dipped his head under the water for a feed the female started nodding her head up and down at the other male. I'm not sure whether this was a secret courtship or a signal to confirm loyalty to her current partner to the interloper. Canon EOS 40D
