Wakey, Wakey
Comments(2) # Wakey, Wakey london e10

Readers of my other blog may recall we had a group of Orange Ladybirds decide to overwinter on one of the concrete balls that sit atop our gateposts. Well, this is the last one to wake up and head elsewhere in search of aphids. Though they look pretty alien this in fact a native species. They, like other ladybird species, overwinter in large groups for protection and apparently also secrete a chemical at their chosen hiding place which allows other ladybirds to find it.... hence the gatherings can sometimes number in the hundreds or even thousands. We had twelve. Happy hunting orange ladybird. Canon EOS 5D
