Common Puffball
Comments(4) # Common Puffball london e17

Time for some more fungi, I think. The Puffballs are so named presumably because, when mature, they puff out a cloud of spores when knocked or split open. They're part of the group known as the Stomach Fungi, not because they're good to eat (though many are when still young), but because the spores are kept inside the body of the fungus until, as mentioned above, they're released in a cloud when split open or knocked. This may be several weeks or even months after the fungus matures and presumably this prolonged period when the spores can be released gives a great evolutionary advantage. We may well get to see some mature spores being released in a cloud in a few days (if I can get a picture I'm happy with, that is). Canon EOS 40D
