Two weeks in it seems apposite to return to the progress of this year's generation. I've saved you from the exciting stages as the spawn slowly takes shape and jumped to the pointe when the tadoles have just emerged from the jellylike mass. This took two weeks in this pond but varies greatly depending on the ambient temperature. The 'poles have external gills clearly visible at this stage (the things that look like hands) and no obvious eyes. They feed mainly on algae and even their dead brothers and sisters whilst staying amongst the remaining spawn. They wriggle.....a lot. Canon EOS 5D
