Oak Apple / Marble
Comments(2) # Oak Apple / Marble london e17

Looking more like a little orange than an apple in this instance. This particular variety is also commonly referred to as an Oak Marble which perhaps better fits. Oak Apples and Marbles are galls created by the reaction of the tree to the laying of eggs by the adult Gall wasp in a leaf bud. In the case of this Marble it's a single wasp hiding in there whereas the more appley ones may contain up to 30. So, the tree's reaction to an intruder ends up providing protection for the intruder until the following year when the adult wasp emerges. Canon EOS 5D
