Comments(7) # Comma london e17

Not the first Butterfly of the year, that, somewhat bizarrely, was a Red Admiral back in January, but this is my first Comma of the season. This species overwinters as an adult though there is some debate as to where exactly. It is certainly almost invisible with its wings closed amongst browned bramble bushes or even on the bark of a tree. Wings open on the dried-up ground by the side of one of East London's busiest roads is slightly less good a hiding place, I could see it from about twenty yards away. This time of year, however, when the air is still cold it's a lot warmer on the bare ground than amongst the leaf litter and this butterfly loves to bask in the sunshine when it's around. This, I'm glad to say, is a species which is apparently increasing in numbers. Canon EOS 5D
