Red Admiral

A few days ago I promised you another immigrant butterfly, so here it is, the Red Admiral. Probably the most common immigrant butterfly in the UK to the extent that many folk don't even realise that they aren't a native species. But is it really still an immigrant anyway? We had one in our garden back pre-LDNP in mid-January, just five days before it snowed. If it hadn't been for the warm spell before the snow it may well have survived. So, whether or not we already have native breeding populations I don't know but it does seem likely that it's only a matter of time. This one, however, looks pretty battered so may well have flown in from Southern Europe just like the books say they do. Canon EOS 5D
